It's funny, to me, a Dutch citizen, the term is incomprehensible, when related to "being something". What does it mean "These guys are the shit"? Living in a genuine way, or ...the real thing?

Yes, to me "the shit" stands for something great and authentic.

I looked it up in the online Urban Dictionary:

The best. This word is very interesting. The important part of it is without THE, an entirely different meaning applies. My teacher is shit= bad teacher. My teacher is THE shit = greatest teacher

Thank you, Sonja. I'm learning each day new words and expressions.
Ignore the former post, it's out of place and I can't seem to be able to delete it right after posting.
Reading about the flaw in the messaging function today, the site seems to be under attack of sabotage.
This page freezes and after renewing it it shows up as a blank vanille coloured page seeing it turn suddenly to normal again.
Some of the funny expressions in England are higgledy-piggledy, holy poly and topsy-turvy.

oh I love the english language! - I want to use higgledy-piggledy... does it mean for exemple 'walking in a wabbly fashion'? What a great expression! - messages are working again!

Pastinakel I love your take on the British. You have us summed up perfectly

Oh thank you, Carla, are you British? I always comfort myself with the realisation that the awareness of the British people is most present
in their sense of humour and cynicism. In the humour they nail their quirkiness, complacency and fuzzy-headedness. Not in their daily life,
in general, which is a culture shock to me, a Dutch resident using common sense in daily practice of life. Hence my need to always keep an
eye on that typical wry British sense of humour. There's more laughter in the streets of England than in those of Holland!
