Mark R It is the most plausible answer. Your postulate of there being "30 cows" is evident. "28 chickens" would have been consistent, but the final verse "How many didn't?" Caused the three expressions to be invalid. After observing, the second statement should read "Twenty ATE chickens". Of the 30 cattle, this would leave TEN that did not.
