I think that the best way to define a group is to include some history of the place, and how it is tied in with the group it is a part of. Brantford used to belong to the Native Amercians, and the person whom it is named after was actually a Native American with an English name. Joseph Brant was not English, he was native. I won't go into the history here, except to say that I learned yesterday from Janine Benyus' book, Biomimicry, that the Native Americans would farm fifty to two hundred acres, then move on, and allow the land to rejuvenate itself, coming back perhaps twenty years later, when it would have started growing back to forest. This is important, as the monoculture crops we have grown for so long are detrimental to the soil and result in more disease. So, it is with that as a backdrop that I think the greater philosophy of which this group is a part can help to guide these industrial farming practices (driven mostly by money, profit and centralization) toward a more realistic long term farming practice, centered around, perhaps, permaculture. Feel free to comment on this, or include some of your own thoughts on how industrial farming practices have shaped this part of Ontario.

Clarence, I agree today's practice of Farming is very harmful, one way might be to rotate corps from year to year and every few years leave the land bare for awhile. other than that there are other methods of farming that do not use the land at all. they use 90 to 98 % less water as well. Aquaponics is one; with one of the other products being Fish or shrimp.

Jeff, I found this link: http://greenhousecanada.com/in…. That reminded me of a gal I met at an entrepreneur's coworking place in Hamilton, ON who was working on modelling how a fish and plant combination could work symbiotically. The waste from the fish would be filtered by the plants. This was being done through the University of Guelph.
